Mercury was introduced in 1939 to be marketed to the public as a economical, semi-luxury car that would fill the publics desire for an automobile that provides more luxury than the entry-level Ford, but not as expensive as the luxury Lincoln models. For the most part, the Mercury line of cars is based on Ford platforms. Until 1945, the platform was marketed as an upscale Ford product. In 1945, the company was combined with Lincoln, becoming part of the new Lincoln-Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company. The marketing mavericks of the Ford Motor Company hoped that the brand could come to be seen as a "junior Lincoln". The ill-fated Edsel was co-joined with Lincoln-Mercury to become the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division for a period of two years, beginning in 1958 and ending in 1960. The division has since been known as the Lincoln-Mercury Division.

The company was at its best in the 1950s, when its formula of stretching and lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful. During the 1970s, the Cougar XR-7 specialty coupe was the best selling car in the car line. Fortunately for the line of cars, they are associated with Lincoln.
