The General Motors Corporation was founded in 1908 by William C. Durant and has grown to be one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. From its early beginnings, GMC has been a conglomeration of many brands, making its original debut as a holding company for the Buick brand. Within its first two years of operation, they purchased Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland and several other car companies, including the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company that made the predecessor of the GMC truck.

GM has long worked to produce economical, alternative-technology vehicles, and has recently led the industry with clean burning Flex Fuel vehicles that can run on either E-85 (ethanol) or gasoline. In 1996, GM had even introduced the first modern mass-produced electric car, which was called the EV1. There was much controversy concerning GMs handling of the EV1 vehicle, and despite a seemingly strong demand, these lease-only vehicles were pulled from the market shortly after their initial introduction to the marketplace. Since the cars were sold on a lease-only option, GM retained and exercised the right to take all EV1s off the road at their own discretion.

GM has suggested that new hybrid technologies will be forthcoming in future models. They also suggested that these new GM vehicles will be optimized for higher speeds, such as those encountered in highway driving.

GM seems to be making a major play to enter into the hybrid-fuel powered marketplace to secure their future. In the meantime, the GMC brand itself is well-known for making rugged and durable trucks and SUV's that keep automobile enthusiasts coming back for more, year after year.
